Jane Warhall is on a roll! The 11-year-old girl often practices her kick flip(空翻) and heel flip at a skate park in her neighborhood in New Haven, Connecticut.
If “kick flip” and “heel flip” aren’t in your vocabulary, welcome to the world of skateboarding. Both of them are skateboarding tricks.
Jane is one of the millions of kids who have made skateboarding one of the fastest-growing sports. There are about 12 million skateboarders in the United States.
What is so attractive(诱人的) about the sport? “I like to skateboard because when I see people at the skate parks and on television, I think I can be that good someday,” Jane said.
Although kids like Jane may be riding for the thrill(刺激) of the sport, experts say skateboarding is a great form of exercise. It gets kids moving and keeps them in shape. Skateboarding lets kids stay active and have fun without the pressure(压力) of a team sport. Today, the sport’s popularity is getting a lift.
Officials hope that skate parks will encourage skaters to practice in a safe environment. Although most skate parks require(要求) riders to wear helmets(头盔) and other safety equipment, it’s hard to avoid(避免) the occasional cut.
Many skateboarders, however, are quick to point out that their sport is no more dangerous than bike riding or football. For Jane, skateboarding gives her a chance to spend time with her friends. “It’s really fun!” she says.
