We will perhaps never know for sure how the nene, the Hawaiian Islands(夏威夷群岛) bird, first came to the islands. Some scientists have studied this question. They say that perhaps some Canadian geese(鹅) were flying south for the winter. Maybe a big storm(暴风雨) blew them off their way. Then they landed in Hawaii. Some of them liked Hawaii. They made their home and stayed all year round on the islands. But others still moved to the south in the winter and to the north in the summer.
Hawaii was good for the nene. However, it was a little too warm. So the nene moved from the lowlands to the mountains. A strange thing happened. After it stayed many years in the mountains, it lost its webbed feet(蹼). There were no lakes in the mountains, so it did not need webbed feet. And its wings(parts of a bird's body used for flying) became smaller because it did not have to fly.
The nene lived happily in Hawaii until the 1800's. Some people in Hawaii thought that the meat of the nene was delicious. They killed and ate many of the birds. Some animals on the islands also ate the nene. Almost all of the nenes were destroyed. There were only 50 birds left in 1950. Then the government decided to protect the nenes, and scientists helped raise(饲养) them. Nene eggs and chicks were carefully kept safe. Now there are several thousand nenes in Maui and Hawaii, and their future looks bright.
