Macaques

When you walk on the small mountain roads in Zhangjiajie National Park, you will often meet macaques(猕猴). Remember to bring peanuts(花生) with you. They're the favorite food of the macaques.
Macaques living in the national park often see visitors, so they are not afraid of people. Some may jump quickly onto the road and stand in your way. They won't leave until you feed them!
There are more than 300 macaques in the park. Macaques stand 40 to 50cm tall with brown or yellow fur(皮毛).
Macaques can use their arms and legs very skillfully. They don't just use them for climbing trees and breaking peanuts open. They also use them to scratch(挠痒) each other while playing!
All macaques live in groups. These groups can be as small as eight or bigger than 100. Macaques organize the groups with the strongest and best fighters(斗士) as the leaders.
The group leader doesn't have an easy job. He has to watch out for danger for the whole group. When an enemy comes, he has to take care of the young. What's more, he has to exercise to stay strong. If not, a stronger macaque will fight him and become the new leader.
Macaque mothers are very caring and loving. When macaque babies are younger than six months old, the mother carries the baby around on her stomach all day. When the mother reaches for food from above, she still holds her baby to make sure it won't fall.
